Remember those strawberry matcha scones? They were inspired by a menu item at Plantees in Orlando that I regretted not ordering: a strawberry matcha shake.
I finally got the strawberry matcha shake there last time I went, and it was as incredible as I'd imagined. So incredible that I wanted to make my own at home, because Plantees is approximately a 6.5 hour drive from my home.
🍓 Ingredients and substitutions
- fresh strawberries - You can uses frozen, if needed, but fresh definitely turn out best!
- sugar - To boost the sweetness of the berries. You can use other dry sweeteners, like coconut sugar or calorie-free sweetener, if you prefer.
- matcha powder - Use good quality matcha, like Gotcha Matcha, to make this milkshake.
- vegan milk - Choose your favorite creamy vegan milk, as well.
- vegan vanilla ice cream - Choose your favorite!
🥣 How to make strawberry matcha milkshakes
- Remove the stems and leaves from the strawberries, if you haven't already, then add them to your blender along with the sugar.
- Blend until you have a smooth mixture. Transfer to a cup or bowl and set aside.
- Rinse out the blender canister. Then, blend together the matcha and vegan milk until they're well combined.
- Add the ice cream, and blend until smooth.
- Layer the milkshake and the strawberry puree in your glass, and serve immediately. I like to pour the milkshake in over a spoon, so you get a cool, angled layer effect, but you can pour it straight in, if you prefer.
💡 Helpful tips
- If you're using an upright blender for the strawberry puree, I recommend doubling the puree amount and reserving the leftovers for the next shake or to use as an ice cream topping or oatmeal mix-in. Upright blenders struggle with smaller amounts, because everything just flies away from the blades.
- Rinse the blender out between making the strawberry puree and the matcha milkshake, so the strawberry residue won't muddy that pretty color!
- If your matcha milkshake ends up too thick, add splashes of vegan milk to thin it out, blending between additions. For a thicker shake, add more ice cream.

Not at all. You can use a regular blender to make your matcha shake.
While the flavors of matcha and strawberry go great together, you'll end up with a muddy color if you blend them all together. Layer, swirl, and enjoy for the best experience!
